FAQ
Questions, answered.
AntiPop
Is AntiPop free?
Yes. No account, no subscription, no paid tier.
Which systems does it run on?
64-bit Ubuntu 24.04 and Nox OS, as a .deb package. Other Debian-based systems may work, but we don’t test them yet. There are no macOS or Windows builds.
Is it based on Chromium? Will my sites work?
Yes — AntiPop is built on Chromium 155.0.8059.39, so sites behave as they do in Chrome. We remove and replace the parts that talk to Google in the background, not the engine.
Can I use Chrome extensions?
AntiPop has a full Chromium extensions manager. You don’t need extensions for ad blocking or dark mode — they’re built in.
Why is there no translation?
Google Translate sends the page text to Google, so it is switched off for good. An offline translator may come later, but only if its quality is good enough.
Will Netflix and other streaming services work?
Services that require Widevine DRM may not play: the Widevine module isn’t included at the moment. Regular video works.
Can I sign in to sync my bookmarks and passwords?
No. There’s no account and no cloud sync — your data stays on your computer. You can import from other browsers and export your own data.
Is the Tor window as safe as Tor Browser?
No, and we don’t claim it is. The Tor window opens .onion sites and keeps traffic inside Tor with no direct fallback, isolated from your normal profile. Tor Browser adds much stronger protection against fingerprinting. For high-risk situations, use Tor Browser.
How good is the phishing protection?
It checks domains against open lists stored on your device, without sending your addresses anywhere. That is weaker than Google Safe Browsing: no cloud analysis, no download scanning, and new threats may be missed.
How do I get updates?
Connect our signed repository (see Download) and update with apt as usual. Nothing updates in the background on its own.
Nox OS
What is Nox OS?
Ubuntu 24.04 LTS with the COSMIC desktop, plus our own shell, apps and design. It’s meant to be calm, fast and private out of the box, with AntiPop as the browser.
When can I download it?
Nox OS is in preview and being tested. The installer image will appear on the download page with its size and checksum as soon as it passes testing.
Will it erase Windows?
Not unless you choose to use the whole disk. You can install next to Windows; the installer shows every partition it will change and asks before writing. Back up your data first anyway.
Do I need to turn off Secure Boot?
No — that’s the goal. Nox boots through the signed Ubuntu boot chain and Canonical-signed NVIDIA drivers, so Secure Boot can stay on for Windows and its games. This is being verified for the first public preview.
Can I run Ubuntu software?
Yes. Nox is built on Ubuntu 24.04, so .deb packages and Flatpak apps made for Ubuntu work. The Nox Store shows them with their permissions.
Does Nox update itself?
No. Updates install only when you press “Update”, and a restore point is created first. The kernel, boot loader and drivers come only from Ubuntu.
